Rotationplasty is one of several types of surgical procedures that can be used to treat malignant bone tumors, such as osteosarcoma or Ewing sarcoma, that occur near a child’s knee (in the lower part of the femur or upper tibia bone). This unusual procedure preserves the lower leg, attaches it to the thighbone, then uses the ankle as a knee joint.
The orthoprosthesis is an external device with the purpose of modifying structural and functional conditions of the skeleton or the neuromuscular system replacing partially or totally part of the missing or inadequate member.
Hip disarticulation and hemipelvectomy, also known as transpelvic amputation, are types of amputation that leave the amputee with the loss of three joints: the hip, the knee, and the ankle. Hip disarticulation is the amputation of the entire lower limb at the hip level, whereas a hemipelvectomy is the amputation of the entire lower limb, plus a portion of the pelvic bone. Hip disarticulation usually occurs due to trauma, tumors, and sever infections, but can be used to treat vascular disease or be the result of complications that arise from diabetes. Hemipelvectomy often results from many of the same afflictions as those of hip disarticulation, plus spinal-cord injuries, recurring severe ulcerations, and infections. Hip disarticulation and hemipelvectomy are considered to be some of the most difficult amputations to overcome, both physically and emotionally, as they can have an adverse impact on an amputee’s self-image, bowels, bladder, and sexual functions.
